Program Goal
The goal of this module is to educate healthcare providers about herbal/supplemental therapy to promote safe and appropriate use of over-the-counter products, such as shark cartilage.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to:
- Apply concepts of evidence-based research methodology to herb/supplement scientific literature, utilizing validated, reproducible grading scales.
- Identify efficacy and safety issues surrounding OTC supplements, including: dosing, toxicology, mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.
- Explain in terms relevant to a patient the significant adverse effects, interactions, pregnancy and lactation data for shark cartilage.
- Describe the folkloric precedent, historic and clinical use of shark cartilage.

Pharmacists, physicians, and pharmacy technicians.
Faculty
Ethan Basch, MD, M.Phil
Dr. Basch received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, Internal Medicine training at Massachusetts General Hospital, and graduate degree in literature from Oxford University. He has held faculty appointments at Harvard Medical School, Northeastern University, University of Rhode Island, and Massachusetts General Hospital. His background in healthcare decision-support, informatics, and health policy includes the design of clinical effectiveness programs and decision-support utilities for multiple healthcare systems. He serves on the Editorial Board of Harvard Health Publications, the publishing arm of Harvard Medical School, and the Journal of Herbal Pharmacotherapy, is Chief Editor of the Massachusetts General Hospital Primer of Outpatient Medicine (Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins), and serves on the Advisory Boards of the Integrative Medicine Alliance and CancerSource. Dr. Basch is committed to improving the quality of medical information, particularly with respect to complementary and alternative therapies.
Paul Hammerness, MD
Dr. Hammerness is a graduate of Dartmouth Medical School, with post-graduate training in Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital and McLean Hospital. He has clinical, administrative, and editorial experience within numerous evidence-based research groups. Dr. Hammerness is committed to continuous quality improvement, particularly when applied to the evaluation of CAM and psychiatric therapies. He is the author of multiple CAM review articles and serves on the Editorial Board for Harvard Health Publications, the publishing arm of Harvard Medical School.
Catherine Ulbricht, PharmD
Dr. Ulbricht serves as Senior Attending Pharmacist, Massachusetts General Hospital, Adjunct Clinical Professor, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, Assistant Clinical Professor, Northeastern University and the University of Rhode Island. She serves on the Editorial Board of Harvard Health Publications, the publishing arm of Harvard Medical School, Journal of the American Nutraceutical Association, Journal of Integrative Cancer Medicine, and Pharmacy Practice News. She is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Herbal Pharmacotherapy. Her background includes experience in the areas of quality improvement, healthcare informatics, and drug therapy decision-support. Dr. Ulbricht has also been trained in physical therapy and chiropractic care. She coordinates research methodology courses and graduate-level internships for seven universities.
