Glucose Monitoring: A Case for Improved Outcomes

Presented by Dave Joffe, RPh, CDE, CPT, FACA
Editor of DiabetesinControl.com

Course description:

In all areas of our patient’s lives they are judged on results. Regardless of whether it is grades on a report card, productivity reports at work, or the time to run a mile or swim 500 yards everything we do in life is based on before and after readings and the change that occurs. But for the most part our patients do not apply these same principles to their diabetes care. Glucose monitoring gives the patient the opportunity apply the same rules to their diabetes care that they use in everyday life. This course will explore differences in A1c readings and how to explain the importance of the readings to your patients.

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this program the learner will be able to:

  1. Describe the importance of glucose monitoring.
  2. Identify analogies to help patients grasp the value of glucose monitoring.
  3. Describe examples of uses for glucose monitoring to improve care.
  4. Define what results mean in terms that a patient can understand .
  5. Describe the recommendations of ACE and ADA for A1c and blood glucose target ranges for non-pregnant adults with diabetes.
  6. Describe the advantages of auto-coded meters and alternate site testing.
  7. Describe monitoring frequency changes during insulin intensification.
  8. Identify therapy choices based on monitoring results.
