Complementary and Adjunctive Medicines (CAM) Used To Treat Diabetes Mellitus

Laura Shane-McWhorter, PharmD, BCPS, FASCP, CDE, BC-ADM
Laura has more than 15 years of experience in the education and care of patients with diabetes. She is the Chair of the Pharmacy Specialty Practice Group of the American Association of Diabetes Educators and a Professor (clinical) in the College of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmacotherapy where she teaches the Herbal Medicines and Natural Drug Products course. She has written numerous articles for the American Diabetes Association journals and chapters on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for the American Association of Diabetes Educators’ Core Curriculum. Truly an expert in the area of diabetes management and complementary therapies, Dr. Shane-McWhorter has lectured widely all over the United States.
Learning Objectives (Pharmacists):
At the completion of this program, the participant will be able to:
- Provide an overview of the epidemiology and complications of diabetes.
- Define “Complementary and Alternative Medicine” (CAM).
- Describe problems that may result from CAM therapy use.
- List commonly used CAM therapies for diabetes.
- List commonly used CAM therapies for diabetes-related complications.
- Describe the pharmacology of CAM therapies used for diabetes.
- List appropriate references to provide information about CAM therapies.
- Provide general guidelines to patients regarding use of CAM therapies.
Learning Objectives (Pharmacy Technicians):
At the completion of this program, the participant will be able to:
- Discuss the scope and breadth of diabetes in America today and the chronic complications associated with this disease.
- Define what is meant by the term "Complimentary and Alternative Medicine" (CAM) as it relates to the treatment of diabetes.
- Describe problems associated with the use of CAM therapy.
- List commonly used herbs, viatmins, minerals, dietary products and other nutritional supplements used in CAM therapy.
- List common CAM therapies used to treat the complications of diabetes.
- Describe the basic pharmacology of supplements used in CAM therapy.
- List appropriate references which provide information about CAM therapies.
- Refer patients to appropriate health care professionals to provide general guidelines regarding the use of CAM therapies used to treat diabetes and the complications of diabetes.
