Alexandra Hilts, Pharm.D., BCPS is a clinical infectious diseases pharmacy specialist at the University of Colorado Hospital and has an appointment as an adjoint assistant professor at the School of Pharmacy, UCHSC. Alexandra received her doctor of pharmacy degree from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and went on to an infectious diseases specialty residency at the University of California, San Francisco. Alexandra is also the president of the consulting company IDRx Consultants LLC. This company is involved in providing local and national training for Pharmaceutical Company Representatives primarily in the therapeutic areas of infectious diseases and oncology.

Goals and Objectives
Program Goal:

To understand the implications of the increasing instance of community acquired MRSA and the potential treatment options available to treat these infections.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
  1. Acknowledge the increasing problem of multi drug resistance in Streptococcus pneumoniae
  2. Become more aware of the over - use of antibiotics for URIs and the damage caused by this action
  3. Discuss the virulence of Staphylococcus aureus
  4. Outline the mechanism of methicillin resistance in Staphylococcus aureus
  5. Recognize the risk factors of hospital – acquired MRSA (HA- MRSA)
  6. Acknowledge the increasing incidence of community – acquired MRSA (CA- MRSA)
  7. Define CA- MRSA
  8. Compare and contrast the risk factors of CA- MRSA with HA- MRSA
  9. Discuss the genetic differences between CA- MRSA and HA- MRSA
  10. Acknowledge the role of skin and soft tissue infection in CA- MRSA
  11. Recognize the potential for CA- GISA or VRSA
  12. Discuss the treatment options for CA – MRSA
  13. Note the agents in the pipeline for MRSA
