Program Goal
The goal of this module is to educate healthcare providers about herbal/supplemental therapy to promote the safe and appropriate use of over-the-counter products such as alfalfa.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to:
- Apply concepts of evidence-based research methodology to herb/supplement scientific literature, utilizing validated, reproducible grading scales.
- Identify efficacy and safety issues surrounding OTC supplements, including: dosing, toxicology, mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.
- Explain in terms relevant to a patient the significant adverse effects, interactions, pregnancy and lactation data for alfalfa.
- Describe the folkloric precedent, historic and clinical use of alfalfa.
Target Audience
Pharmacists, physicians, and pharmacy technicians.
Faculty
Michelle Harrison, PharmD Dr. Harrison is a clinical pharmacist in the Adult Inpatient Satellite of the New England Medical Center in Boston. She is also a clinical research associate for the Natural Standard Research Collaboration. She received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 2001 from the University of Rhode Island. She has given numerous presentations and is affiliated professionally with the American College of Clinical Pharmacists, the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, the American Pharmaceutical Association and the Massachusetts Society of Hospital Pharmacists.
Mamta Vora, PharmD Dr. Vora is a clinical research associate and medical writer for National Standard. She graduated with her doctorate of pharmacy from Northeastern University in 1999. She was a staff pharmacist for the New England Medical Center. She has completed many professional projects, posters and publications. She also has teaching and research experience with Northeastern University.
